The range and diversity of Audra's work in her career as an artist is unmatched. Audra has received seven Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards and one Emmy Award. Record-breaking six times winner of the Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards in addition to an Emmy Award she received in the year 2015 by Barack Obama. She has a voice of unparalleled elegance and an aptitude to tell the truth in a dramatic way Her roles in Broadway or in the opera are as comfortable as the roles in movies and TV. In addition to her theatre work, she has an active career as a musician and recording artist. She regularly performs in some of the top venues around the world. McDonald is a native of California, born in Fresno California to a music family, received the classical vocal training she received at the New York's Juilliard School. One year after graduation McDonald won her Tony Award Best Performance for a Lead Actress of Musical at Carousel in the Lincoln Center Theater. Over the next four years, she also received two more Tony Awards under the featured actress category. The awards were given for her Broadway performance in Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. The year 2004, she took home her 4th Tony by starring as a lead in A Raisin in the Sun alongside Sean Diddy Combs. Then in 2013, she brought her fifth Tony as well as her 1st in the Leading actress category. In 2014 she made Broadway history and became the Tony Awards most decorated performer when she won her sixth award in the role of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which also served as a stage for her Olivier Award-nominated debut performance on London's West End. Aside from setting a record in the contest in which she won the most awards by an actor, she was the first to have won all four acting categories. Her theater credits includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2007) 110 in the Shade (2008) Twelfth (2009) The Twelfth, the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park premiere Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical sensation in 1921 and All That Followed (2017) Frankie & Johnny in Clair de Lune (2018) as well as Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald was introduced to the television audience as a dramatic actor in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say the Delany Sisters first 100 years. Her next role was that of a regular actor in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit, in which she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald's first Emmy was awarded for her performance in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. Produced by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the main character and McDonald returned to television networks in 2003. She starred in Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award Winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. The actress was a part of The Bedford Diaries of the WB series The Bedford Diaries in early 2006. In the following season, she played an recurring role on the NBC TV show Kidnapped. McDonald's performance in the HBO movie Lady Day At Emerson Bar Restaurant earned her four times an Emmy nomination in the year 2016. McDonald starred along with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama co-produced through Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald played U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence, a character she first played on CBS's The Good Wife legal drama in the year 2009. It was her turn to reprise the role in 2018as the season main character Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. In recognition of the role she played, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominated. She's currently appearing as guest on Julian Fellowes' historic film The Gilded Age.
